Founding and Funding
The Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB) was launched by the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in 2008, supported by start-up funding from the BMBF and the Senate of Berlin. The scientific concept was initiated by Nikolaus Rajewsky, who is now leading the program and its further developments. So far, BIMSB received outstanding reviews in international scientific evaluation processes. BIMSB received 19 Mio € federal and state kick-off funding in total. Additional institutional funds were granted by the BMBF and Senate from 2013-2014. From 2015 onwards the Federal Ministry of Science and Education (BMBF) has committed to sustain an annual budget of 17.5 Mio € for the BIMSB research program. In addition to sustained research funds, the BMBF provides 33.5 Mio € for the construction of the new BIMSB building in Berlin Mitte.
BIMSB Group Leaders are involved in numerous regional and international funding networks and are awarded more than 24.3 Mio € of competitive extramural funding for research projects and awards (2009-10/2016). There are individual and collaborative grants and network activities funded by the BMBF, DFG, EC, HFSP, NIH, foundations and industry. Additional 4.4 Mio € are being granted through projects of the BIH and DZHK.
